Governor's vetoes: There's just no pleasing some people

ELLEN WEDUM Democratic candidate, District 59

In order to keep track of the concerns of the residents of House District 59, I have been following the three major papers (Roswell Daily Record, Ruidoso News, and Alamogordo Daily News). There has been a lot of Richardson bashing going on in the last month, especially by Roswell legislators. I don't really think this is justified.

Note that Richardson stated that his goal was to restore the state's cash reserves to 10 percent of general spending. A certain Roswell Republican [Nora Espinoza] voiced concerns on March 7 that the budget reserve was "at its lowest level in 10 years," but I don't hear any cheers now that he has corrected this problem.

I have reviewed the information provided by the Southern New Mexico Economic Development Department (you can check it out at my web page, www.oterocountydemocrats.org/wedum59.htm) and, while it is true that Chaves County "only" received $10,974,000 while Otero County received $12,137,000, the Roswell school system alone got $1,382,000 for 23 different projects. The town of Lake Arthur did receive $60,000 of the $125,000 they requested for the police/courthouse complex.

Looking at examples in Otero and Lincoln counties, the village of Cloudcroft only received $150,000 of the $2.2 million they requested for 2 raw water storage facilities. The Village of Capitan, part of District 57, requested a total of nearly $3.5 million.

Even Flyover Foley only appropriated $300,000 of this amount (which was vetoed by Richardson). But would Foley have had any kind words for the governor if those appropriations had NOT been vetoed?

Ironically, while Republican Rod Adair is quoted in the March 10 Roswell Daily Record as saying that Richardson "continues to attack eastern New Mexico" two letters published on March 31 in the Ruidoso News claim that he "is sending the lion's share of state monies and jobs to southern New Mexico." [This part was enlarged and boxed.]

These two writers (Charles Montano and Ralph Arellanes) also inflate the spaceport appropriation from $100 million to $200 and $250 million, respectively. There's just no pleasing some people.

We in New Mexico need to remember that we are one of only a few states that has a budget surplus, and if it weren't for our rich resources of gas and oil, we would have NO money for these capital outlay projects. And, there's always next year.
